LONDON, November 7, 2023 – “The UK is showing once again that it is a global leader on tobacco control. Its bold plan to protect youth and accelerate the end of the smoking epidemic is laudatory. But the government must also specifically emphasize its 2030 target to reduce the adult smoking rate to below 5%.
“We can’t leave today’s adult smokers behind. The government should aggressively combat growing health inequalities through smoking cessation and by incentivizing those adult smokers who can’t or are unwilling to otherwise stop smoking to use far safer alternative nicotine products.
“The world should take note of the UK’s approach, as it continues to take innovative steps to save more lives. And we must never forget that adults who smoke make up the main at-risk population and offer the greatest and most immediate opportunity to save lives.”
