The ongoing 2019 poll will reflect different cultural, socioeconomic, and tobacco-regulatory backgrounds, as a follow-up of the initial 2017 poll. This current poll has a more in-depth focus on current smoking behaviors, awareness, and consumption of alternative nicotine products, as well as beliefs and perceptions in terms of harmfulness and addictiveness of various nicotine products. Characterizing the participants in terms of social environment, socioeconomic status, and educational level will help contextualize the findings.
Compared with the initial 2017 poll, the 2019 edition is being conducted in seven countries – six fewer countries than in the initial 2017 poll – but will capture more participants per country. The target population is former and current smokers and vapers, as well as dual- and polyproduct users. To help update the questionnaire content and design, a series of focus group discussions is being conducted with former and current smokers and vapers, as well as dual- and polyproduct users. Focus group discussions will also complete a quantitative part of the survey in each of the seven countries.
