Data & Analytics

Smokers in many countries are witnessing rapid changes consequent to to the introduction of new reduced-risk products, or due to changes in product prices or regulations. It is important to have up-to-date data available and analyzable at national and subnational levels to track progress and to help guide the actions of consumers, regulators, and other stakeholders. To continually refine the Foundation’s activities, we seek to identify data gaps in tobacco research.

We address these data gaps by commissioning:

  • Data gathering to complement what is already being collected by the Global Adult and Youth Tobacco Surveys, in particular, smoking cessation rates and the prevalence of ex-smokers in various populations
  • Surveys of consumers’ perceptions of risks and relative risks, intentions, and behaviors related to smoking, cessation, use of alternative nicotine products, and harm reduction
  • Surveys of physicians’ and other healthcare professionals’ perceptions of risks and relative risks and their understanding of issues related to smoking, cessation, use of alternative nicotine products, and harm reduction
  • Surveys of media coverage of smoking cessation and harm reduction, focusing on scientific accuracy of the content
  • Real-time information on product availability, prices, and sales volumes for cigarettes, cessation tools, reduced-risk products
  • Up-to-date information on legislation and regulation related to nicotine and tobacco products, on their alignment with available scientific evidence, and on the effectiveness of their implementation and enforcement
