Capacity building for acceleration of agricultural transformation to prepare Malawi for a time when there is less demand for leaf tobacco

Expected Key Deliverables

Legally register and staff MwAPATA Institute in Malawi as an independent, Malawian-led policy think tank. Generate evidence from research and consultative processes to inform formulation, implementation, and evaluation of agricultural and related policies. Provide support to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to effectively build on existing policy priorities embraced by the Malawian Government and agricultural sector stakeholders. Contribute to the process on the formulation of Vision 2063, the country’s long-term vision coordinated by the National Planning Commission

Key Deliverables Received

MwAPATA is legally registered and engaging in policy research. Partnered with the National Planning Commission for Eminent Speaker Series. Participated in regional policy events and ReNAPRI network African policy institutes. Deliverables received include: (i) Creating linkages to local research programs at the National Agricultural University of Malawi, and to other Malawi policy organizations to guide policy reform and implementation; (ii) Provide technical guidance to the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) to reform the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP); (iii) Support key institutions to catalyze agricultural transformation (MoA, Ministry of Lands); (iv) prioritize three agricultural commodity value chains as alternatives to tobacco farming, and guide the MoA to implement its diversification strategy; (v) provide research and embedded technical expertise to promote evidence-based agricultural policy reforms to the government of Malawi
