The Second Annual Agricultural Transformation Summit

November 14, 2019

After one year of programming, the Agricultural Transformation Initiative (ATI) will convene its second annual Agricultural Transformation Summit. Focusing on the theme of inclusive agricultural science, technology, and innovation, the event seeks to encourage knowledge sharing and idea generation to drive transformation in Malawi.

Held in Lilongwe, Malawi on Thursday, November 14, the Summit will feature keynote speaker William Kamkwamba, author of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Invitation-only side events will take place on Wednesday, November 13.

Summit sessions will include discussions on:

  • AgTech Challenge. The Center for Agricultural Transformation (CAT) will present the results of their first AgTech Challenge. Taking place just before the Summit, the AgTech Challenge invites grade school and university students to conceptualize innovations that can enhance the competitiveness of the groundnut sector. This discussion will feature AgTech Challenge guest judge and mentor William Kamkwamba.
  • Ground Sensor Hackathon. The CAT program will present the results of their first hackathon. The hackathon will include data science students from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) and the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST). This activity will challenge the students to program multi-node sensors that can be used for automatic data collection and integration across agricultural value chains.
  • Opportunities and Challenges in Index-Based Insurance. The Investment Support Facility program will discuss the role of crop insurance as a risk transfer instrument to encourage investment. They will also discuss key lessons learned after a day of pre-arranged “speed dating” sessions between prospective investors and prospective investees.
  • Land and Spatial Analysis for Investment. Following a special presentation, a panel will discuss implementation challenges surrounding investment in Malawi, with a focus on land reform and workable economic models that can be adapted for the country.
